A Ring Main Unit (RMU) is a compact, factory-assembled, and metal-enclosed switchgear unit used for medium-voltage (MV) power distribution. It is primarily designed to enhance the reliability of a distribution substation by allowing for a "ring" or looped network configuration.

The RMU's main job is to ensure a continuous power supply. In a ring-type network, each load point (like a residential complex or industrial park or factory) is connected to two different power sources or paths. If one part of the cable or a feeder fails, the RMU can quickly isolate the faulty section and reroute power from the alternative path, minimizing downtime.

• Load Break Switches : Used for normal switching and isolating sections.

• Circuit Breakers : Provide protection by automatically cutting power during a fault.

• Earthing Switch : A safety feature used to ground the equipment during maintenance to prevent electric shocks.
