Ring Main Unit (RMU)
01
What is Ring Main Unit (RMU) ?
A Ring Main Unit (RMU) is a compact, factory-assembled, and metal-enclosed switchgear unit used for medium-voltage (MV) power distribution. It is primarily designed to enhance the reliability of a distribution substation by allowing for a "ring" or looped network configuration.
02
What is Core Purpose and Function of Ring Main Unit (RMU) ?
The RMU's main job is to ensure a continuous power supply. In a ring-type network, each load point (like a residential complex or industrial park or factory) is connected to two different power sources or paths. If one part of the cable or a feeder fails, the RMU can quickly isolate the faulty section and reroute power from the alternative path, minimizing downtime.
03
What are the key components are used in Ring Main Unit (RMU) ?
Load Break Switches : Used for normal switching and isolating sections.
Circuit Breakers : Provide protection by automatically cutting power during a fault.
Earthing Switch : A safety feature used to ground the equipment during maintenance to prevent electric shocks.
Busbars : Conductors that connect the various internal switches and incoming / outgoing lines.
04
In which type application we can use the Ring Main Unit (RMU) ?
Urban Distribution : Residential complexes and high-rise buildings.
Infrastructure : Airports, hospitals, and underground railway systems.
Renewable Energy : Wind and solar power plants.
Industry : Factories and mining operations.
