FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
01
What is an ABB electromechanical relay, and how does it function?
An ABB electromechanical relay is a protection and control device that relies on physical moving parts (such as magnetic armatures, induction disks, or induction cups) to open or close electrical contacts. When an electrical parameter (current, voltage, power, or frequency) exceeds a pre-set threshold, the electromagnetic force overcomes a restoring spring or restraining mechanism to operate the output contacts, triggering a circuit breaker to isolate a fault.
02
Why are electromechanical relays still used when numerical/digital relays exist?
Electromechanical relays have protected power systems for over 100 years. They remain in service because :
Robustness & Simplicity : They are immune to software glitches, firmware bugs, cyberattacks, and electromagnetic interference (EMI/EMP).
Proven Track Record : Many legacy units function reliably for 30–50+ years with proper maintenance.
03
How often should ABB electromechanical relays be inspected and calibrated?
Because electromechanical relays feature moving parts, mechanical wear, dust accumulation, and contact oxidation can occur over time. ABB recommends a routine maintenance cycle every 1 to 3 years, depending on the operating environment (humidity, vibration, ambient temperature).
04
Can obsolete ABB electromechanical relays be retrofitted with modern protection relays?
Yes. Synergy ABB Authorised Distributor (Channel Partner) provides direct replacement solutions and migration paths. Older electromechanical relays can be upgraded to modern digital numerical relays—such as the ABB Relion® series (REX605, REX615, REX640).
