64R protection (ANSI Device Code 64R, also designated as 64REF or 87NLI or 87NHI) is Restricted Earth Fault (REF) protection, a unit protection scheme designed to detect internal ground faults within a specific zone of a transformer winding. It fills a critical blind spot near the neutral star point where standard transformer differential relays (87T) fail to operate.
# Key Components
Phase Current Transformers (CTs): Three CTs mounted on the phase terminals of the transformer winding and connected in parallel.
Neutral Current Transformer (NCT): A single CT placed on the neutral-to-ground connection of the star-connected winding.
Protected Zone: Strictly bounded between the location of the phase CTs and the neutral CT.
# How It Works ?
The system operates on the principle of current balance between the vector sum of phase currents and the neutral current.
Normal Operation / External (Through) Faults: During normal operation or external ground faults outside the CT zone, the vector sum of the three phase currents (IA + IB + IC) equals the neutral current (IN / I0). The current circulating in the relay is zero (I{phase\residual} - I{neutral} = 0), so the relay restrains and stays stable.
Internal Earth Faults: When an insulation breakdown occurs between a winding phase and earth inside the CT boundaries, current flows back through the neutral CT without a balancing sum in the phase CTs (or vice versa). The balance is broken (I{diff} is not equal to 0), developing a differential current that triggers the 64R relay to immediately trip the transformer circuit breaker.
# Why 64R is Essential for Transformers
High Neutral Sensitivity: Earth faults occurring near the transformer neutral point generate very low voltage and small fault currents—especially on impedance-grounded systems. Standard differential protection (87T) cannot detect these micro-faults, whereas 64R can detect faults occurring within 5% to 10% of the neutral point.
Out-of-Zone Immunity: Because the zone is strictly restricted to the CT boundaries, it ignores severe external through-faults on feeders, preventing unnecessary power station outages.
# Implementation Types
High-Impedance REF: Connects a high-value stabilizing resistor in series with the relay to prevent false tripping caused by CT saturation during heavy external faults.
Low-Impedance (Numerical) REF: Uses digital relays that sample phase and neutral currents separately, using digital bias algorithms to calculate vector differences.
